FAQs

How high is the City of Cusco?

The city of Cusco is located in the Andes Mountains of Peru and has an average elevation of 3,400 meters (11,152 feet) above sea level. However, certain parts of the city can reach higher elevations, such as the ruins of Sacsayhuaman which sits at an elevation of approximately 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) above sea level. The high altitude can affect some people, so it’s important to take precautions such as drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and heavy meals, and taking it easy until you acclimate to the altitude.

How was the city of Cusco guarded?

The city of Cusco was guarded by a complex system of fortifications and military installations during the Inca Empire. The city was surrounded by walls made of large stone blocks that were carefully fitted together without mortar. These walls served as protection against potential invaders and were also used to control access to the city.

In addition to the city walls, the Incas also constructed a series of fortresses and watchtowers in the surrounding hills and mountains. These structures were strategically placed to provide a clear view of the surrounding area and to serve as an early warning system in case of attack.

One of the most impressive fortresses built by the Incas was Sacsayhuaman, located just outside the city. This fortress included massive stone walls that were up to 18 meters (60 feet) high and 6 meters (20 feet) thick, and was equipped with towers, gates, and other defensive features.

Overall, the Incas took great care to protect the city of Cusco, and their impressive fortifications are a testament to their engineering and military prowess.
